The UK’s prestigious national welder competition is now open for entries from trainee welders.

Every year The Welding Institute helps organise SkillWeld, a competition which leads into the WorldSkills UK Finals, held this year at the NEC Birmingham.

A series of regional heats identifies the best young welders and the top ten are invited to compete at the WorldSkills UK Finals, earning a shot at a medal and possibly even a chance to represent their country on the international stage. The best quality welds at regional heats will also be tested to give the competitor the opportunity to achieve a BS EN ISO 9606-1 Welder Qualification in MAG (135) Fillet Weld, sponsored by our competition partners Code A Weld.

If you are a trainee welder with good levels of skill in MMA, MIG/MAG and TIG you can now register for the 2016 regional heats. Test yourself by completing the passive test pieces within your colleges and employers. Competitors achieving 250 points and over can register to compete in one of the live regional heats.

The ten highest scoring competitors from the live heats will go on to compete at the national final held at The Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham in November. The winner will be crowned the coveted title of SkillWeld 2016 champion.

The UK’s premier craft welding skill competition helps to raise the profile and importance of welding skills in UK industry, as well as giving contestants the chance to compete on a national and international stage.

Any welder who is currently undergoing training is eligible to enter SkillWeld 2016. Entrants must be proficient in MMA and TIG and MIG/MAG.
