TWI has entered into a research centre agreement with Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials (BIAM), a leader in aero engine manufacturing research in China.
The five-year agreement, ‘BIAM-TWI Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Technologies,’ was officially signed in Beijing on 23 June 2017 by AECC BIAM vice-president Professor Yajun Wang and TWI chief executive Christoph Wiesner.
The agreement will see TWI and AECC BIAM collaborate on research into civil aero engine development, while exploring mutual areas of information and disseminating scientific information. Among the initial research topics are additive manufacturing, brazing diffusion bonding and repair of gas turbine materials. As part of the agreement, visiting research staff will be seconded from AECC BIAM to TWI in support of the projects.
AECC BIAM is a comprehensive scientific and technical research institute engaged in the application of fundamental research, material research and manufacture for the application of advanced aeronautical materials. TWI and AECC BIAM are aligned in their desire to establish a world-class research association based around advanced manufacturing technologies at TWI, as well as collaborating on BIAM-funded applied and fundamental research.
Speaking on the agreement, Christoph Wiesner said, “TWI is delighted to be able to intensify its relationship with a key Chinese Member company. The project will facilitate generic near-market materials and manufacturing technology development as well as support capability training and staff exchange. This is a great example how TWI is developing relationships with Industrial Members at a strategic level to allow a deeper understanding of their R&D needs and develop an effective response to these. We look forward to ongoing collaborations with AECC BIAM to advance aviation engineering in future.”
